Adventure Activities at Arthog and in Snowdonia

This page provides you with a short desription of the variety of adventure activities available at Arthog. Your programme is planned with you to ensure that you get the most from your stay with us. The content and delivery of your programme is guided by your requirements.

Half day sessions

 

  • Initiative Tasks

    Short duration problem solving games that develop the team and set the scene for subsequent activities. Usually based in the Centre grounds, but can be set up along the Mawddach Estuary.

  • Orienteering.

    Students working individually or in pairs to find their way around set courses in the woods. This is the most effective activity for developing map reading skills – and its great fun!

  • Gorge Scrambling.

    An outstanding group challenge involving the students helping each other through the rocky terrain of a mountain stream. Waterfalls, pools and slides make this one of your wetter sessions !

  • Wave Skiing

    A sit-on surf board powered with a kayak paddle ! Exhilarating, fun activity, superb for developing water confidence.

  • Open Canoeing

    An adventure using two person open canoes for developing confidence and skills on local pools or exploring the stunning Mawddach Estuary. Encourages co-operative working and communication skills.

  • Voyageur

    A 24ft long Open Canoe which takes a whole group – harks back to the Canadian Wilderness frontiersmen. Gives a genuine group experience, and platform for viewing wildlife and the water environment in its different shades.

  • Mine Exploration

    A unique experience exploring tunnels and chambers carved into the mountain side over a Century ago. Opportune time for reflecting on the life and working practices of Victorian mining communities.

  • Kayaking

    Opportunity to explore estuaries or the impressive local coast line, to develop group responsibility and personal kayak handling skills.

  • Rock Climbing

    An exhilarating and rewarding challenge, actively involving all students, were self-confidence, co-operation, trust and teamwork develop. Confidence and skills are nurtured within the session to ensure everyone achieves to an appropriate level.

  • High Level ropes course

    Seconday students only. Elements include : Leap of Faith, Postmans walk , Burma bridge.

  • 'Sit on top' kayaks

A kayaking experience without the worry of a capsize. You sit on these craft in a wet suit and if you capsize, you simply climb back on!! Easy and fun!!

  • Mountain Walking

    A wilderness experience where students discover the beauty and challenge presented by journeying in the high mountain landscape of the Cader Idris or Rhinog ranges. Opportunities to consider factors involved with the formation of landscape; to develop mapwork skills; and to raise awareness of mountain safety.

  • Photowalk

    A lower level mountain walk taking in some superb scenery, with the group using maps and photographs to find their way. An ideal platform for Key Stage 2 topics such as the water cycle, rivers and mountain environment.

  • Open Canoeing

    A longer session creates opportunity for journeying on the beautiful local rivers and estuaries.

  • Kayaking


    Use our inland kayaks to journey along the rivers and estuaries or our sea kayaks to explore the local coastline.

  • Rock Climbing

    Barmouth slabs are one of the best beginner's venues in the country.  A whole day allows you to take full advantage of the venue and progress confidence levels and skills.

Extra Cost Activities

  • White Water Rafting

    An exciting and demanding 2hr activity using inflatable rafts to descend the rapids of the River Tryweryn. (Over 12yrs and competent swimmers) – 7 persons per raft

  • Mountain Biking

    An introduction to the thrill of off-road cycling in Coed Y Brenin Forest. Safe, responsible biking technique is reinforced throughout the journey. (Secondary pupils and adults only)

Evening Activities

  • Bothy

    Spend an evening in a remote cottage under the cliffs of Bird Rock, cook your own evening meal and return to the Centre for breakfast (or cook your own.)

    Short orienteering courses within the Centre grounds.

  • Nightline

    Feel your way along a line blindfolded – great for developing trust and communication

  • Nightwalk

    An exhilarating experience walking by the estuary and sea at night time

  • Photosearch

    A mapping activity requiring photographs of features in the grounds to be recognised, located and marked on a blank map.

  • Tee Pee

    A genuine American Indian style teepee, can be used for story telling or sleeping in on site.
